Key Responsibilities
To ensure optimal utilization of a work group doing maintenance, rehabilitation and repair of track infrastructure over a specific geographical area to prescribed quality standards to ensure safe and reliable track to support business goals
Position Outputs
Timeously execution of the maintenance plan •Responds top call-outs and trolley defects •Rectify defects according to prescribed standards •Ensure safety and safe work procedures relevant to the situation have been discussed •Execute transport duties, ensuring team is transported to the work site on time •Perform pre-trip inspection of vehicle •Ensure proper communication with operation(TCO) with respect to train working •Ensure the correct handling of materials and equipment
Ensure that his team is transported to the workplace safely and on time. •Ensure that the vehicle is reliable and roadworthy according to the checklist •Must adhere to road regulations and trafficrules •Acquire an authority number to use the Transnet Freight Rail vehicle •Adhere to vehicle policy of TFR
To conduct a safety talk with the team,ensure correct understanding of requirements thereof and ensure that the team has the correct Personal Protective Equipment before commencement of the work shift •Needs to know the job activities for each day •Adhere to list when providing safety talks •Ensure that the list is signed by each team member for record keeping purposes •Conduct an interactive safety talk inviting input from team •Submit an order list for PPE equipment on a monthly basis •Ensure that the team uses the PPE correctly before the shift
Ensure that the correct working tools are in a serviceable condition, are available and returned on a daily basis •Adhere to the tools list •Remove defective tools and prevent usage of them. •Order new tools as and when needed •Ensure tools are in the correct storage places on the vehicle during transportation •Ensure tools are serviced regularly •Use the correct tools for the correct tasks and purpose intended for •Ensure tools collected are returned to the truck
Supervise team •Complete all relevant documentation like timecards •Maintain safety files for all team members re risk based safety talks, attendance register, substance abuse procedures, and safe work procedures •Complete before and after measurements of workplace and record data •Ensure that the team is fit for duty including substance abuse testing on a daily basis, and ensure the safety and the health of team from all potential hazards at all times •Conduct alcohol testing •Interpret results from the alcohol testing •Ensure team attends the medical surveillance tests annually •Retain alcohol test results for incidents report •Identify safety hazards beforehand •Refer team members to EAP when necessary
To manage the perfomance of the team and general Human Resources issues to ensure continuous productivity •Complete necessary documentation for the team •Conduct alcohol testing in the mornings and the afternoon •Ensure that the team is using the right tools for the job •Supervise the team constantly to ensure safety and to avoid deviations •Manage and authorise leave requests •Manage disciplinary procedures •Manage absenteeism
Ensure that all processes and procedures related to the safe passage of trains are adhered to at all times including preventative maintenance, and identifying and repairing all track related defects •To assess the section for risks •To identify the track defects •Conduct a safety talk with teams •To measure the track defects •Inform CTC of work being done on that specific section •Communicates with other departments e.g signal and electrical for repairing of defects •Supervise the team to ensure safety and performance •Measure standards after work is completed to see whether the work conforms to the standard •Remove all protection from the track •Inform CTC that track is safe for the passage of trains
Obtain occupation from the train control Officer before working on the track to ensure protection standards are correctly set out,to provide feedback of the necessary activities performed on the track and to declare the safety thereof •Notify the CTC before taking occupation of the track •Inform CTC of nature of work to be performed on the track •Inform CTC of the estimated time of occupation •Should occupation time exceed estimated communicated to the CTC, should inform CTC accordingly. The “run over” must also be communicated to the Production/Maintenance/Manager •Transport Flagmen to the correct distance •Make sure that they have the correct flags and enough detonators •Communicate with Flagmen using the two way radios to esure safety •Ensure that the Flagmen remmove all the protection from the track •Communicate with CTC to declare the line safe for the passage of trains
Documentation and Information system •Complete different documents and forms correctly •Submit forms relevant people •Keep copies of all relevant forms for future preferences •Certify/authorize documentation for the other departments Create a filing system for documentation •To provide feedback to the supervisor on the daily progress of the job •Notify supervisor if work not completed or completed •Inform supervisor of resources required for additional work

Requirements
•Grade 12 with Maths •Be in possession of a code C1 Driver’s License and be competent and prepared to drive such a vehicle •PDP •Code 29 lifting Certificate •Track master phase three Certificate •Mentally fit •Physically fit •RRV Certificate
